Made In Candy

on Monday, June 25, 2012

Last Friday (22/06), MSC and Cheers students had another field trip at the Made In Candy shop. The shop is situated Near Novena MRT station. The colourful displays of candies appealed to the younger crowd. The students were fascinated!

This visit showed us how they made the small little pictures/letters inside the candy.

This is how they do it:

First, they boiled the mixture of sugar, glucose and water to a certain temperature. Added coloring [the one in red]. The Candy chef mentioned that the mixture of sugar, glucose and water is very sweet. So, they added acid to the mixture giving it the sour taste which makes the candy taste nicer. :D [acid is the one on the right]

After adding what is needed, the Candy chef cut the mixture, apparently slightly harden, into a few parts.

The Candy chef pulled and stretch the mixture, allowing air to get into it. He said that by doing this, it allows the candy to dissolve in our mouth faster.

After a few minutes of stretching and pulling, the Candy chef starts to shape the mixture on this yellow table which feels warm [it prevents the Candy from hardening so that he can shape the Candy]

Slowly, step by step, the Candy chef stack up pieces of Candy together, binding them with water, to create the picture. :D He said that the mixture cannot be melted again so if he did a wrong step, the whole thing will be wasted.

This is the exterior layer of the Candy which is also bind using water.

The Candy chef wrap the exterior layer around the whole mixture!!

He squeezed the end of the Candy and rolled it....

 into a long long shape....

It is then transferred to this stainless steel table for it to cool and harden.....

and cut into small little candies...

that are ready to be packed!!! :D

This cute candy is done!!!!

It can even be made into lollipops!

Everyone enjoyed this field trip, where they got to learn the process of making the candies, and learning about many other things, like their business process and visual display.
